We’re excited to announce that our Luxura deck board now has an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This is a significant milestone for us, underscoring our commitment to sustainability and transparency. But what exactly does this mean for you, and why should it matter in your decision-making process?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a detailed, third-party verified document providing a comprehensive overview of a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Typically 10-15 pages long, it includes technical product details and environmental data based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The LCA examines the product from raw material extraction to disposal, helping manufacturers, designers, and architects understand its environmental performance and make more sustainable choices.
By having this EPD, we’re ensuring that you have the information you need to make an informed decision when choosing our Luxura deck boards for your projects.
How Is an EPD Created?
Creating an EPD is a thorough and collaborative process. It starts with a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), where we analyse every stage of our product’s life — from raw material extraction (A1) to disposal (C4) and even potential recycling or reuse (D). Each stage is carefully examined for energy use, waste generation, and resource consumption.
Next, a background report is generated that outlines the methodology, assumptions, and standards followed during the LCA. This report is then verified by an independent third party, ensuring that the data is accurate and reliable. Once verified, the final EPD is published, providing you with a clear, trustworthy summary of our product’s environmental impact.
EPDs are created in accordance with recognised international standards, such as:
- EN 15804+A2
- ISO 14040 and ISO 14044
- ISO 14025
- Product Category Rules (PCR)
- General Programme Instructions (GPI)
These standards ensure consistency, transparency, and credibility, making the EPD a valuable tool for anyone looking to evaluate the environmental footprint of a product.
Understanding the Key Elements of the Luxura EPD
EPDs provide key data that helps you evaluate a product’s environmental impact. The main sections include:
- Product Description: The EPD provides technical details about our Luxura range, including its material composition and intended use in construction.
- Life Cycle Stages: The document provides a lifecycle breakdown of environmental impacts, detailing the carbon footprint from raw material extraction and processing (A1-A3), transport emissions (A4), and end-of-life scenarios (C1-C4, D).
- Impact Categories: Information on various environmental impacts, such as global warming potential, energy use, and water consumption.
How Luxura Customers Benefit from Our New EPD
Having an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for our Luxura deck board provides significant benefits for manufacturers, designers, and architects. It helps identify environmental hotspots by highlighting areas where impact reductions are possible—whether in raw material sourcing, transportation, or energy use. This allows for more sustainable choices at every stage of a project.
Although Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are currently voluntary, upcoming legislation is expected to make them a requirement. By securing an EPD now, we are proactively preparing for these changes and reinforcing our commitment to environmental responsibility. More importantly, an EPD enhances transparency, providing detailed, data-backed information about the environmental impact of our products. This fosters trust and accountability with our customers. Additionally, EPDs empower professionals to make informed decisions by offering comprehensive lifecycle data and helping them choose materials that support their sustainability objectives.
