Construction 2025: What is the government’s vision and strategy?

With the global construction industry expected to grow by more than 70% in 2025, the government is set to bolster British construction businesses by developing strategic plans and leveraging any growth opportunities. The government efforts have resulted in the formulation of ‘Construction 2025’, a strategy aimed at putting ‘Britain at the forefront of global construction in the coming years’.

  1. People: The industry should be known for its diverse, talented, and committed workforce.
  2. Smart: The industry must be efficient, effective, and technologically advanced.
  3. Sustainable: There should be a focus on greener construction practices and low-carbon exports.
  4. Growth: The construction industry should drive growth across the UK economy.
  5. Leadership: The industry should have effective leadership from a Construction Leadership Council.

Increase the workforce’s capability: As the construction industry continues to be driven by innovation, greener measures and sustainability goals, there is an urgent need to attract a talented workforce and upskill the current one. Engaging with bodies across the construction industry will ensure that skills, capabilities, and capacity concerns are strategically addressed.

The industry faces a pressing need for a talented workforce that can deliver high-quality results and keep up with the changing regulatory landscape. Construction companies must be able to ‘recruit, retain and develop skilled, hard-working people’ in sufficient numbers.

Proper training and apprenticeships will ensure that workers can adapt to the changing industry, understand the new regulations and changes, and work accordingly.

The government is encouraging the industry to improve its image by inspiring young people through a considerate approach to health and safety and ‘enhancing performance in the repair and maintenance market’.

Promote research and innovation: The construction industry must invest in people, technology, and research to grab local and global opportunities presented by green construction and digitalisation. The industry has committed to the Building Information Modelling (BIM) programme, which helps companies deliver more sustainable and efficient buildings.

Working with academic and research institutions can support innovative developments and pave the way to a brighter future. The government aims to promote and elevate UK construction in the field of digital design and technology through the Digital Built Britain agenda.

Build a sustainable industry: Developing and investing in low-carbon construction opportunities and projects will bolster focus on sustainable initiatives and increase their potential. Using and developing technology to reduce embodied carbon can result in greener buildings and a sustainable future. The government’s strategy emphasises understanding and refining future work prospects to make better recruitment, training, and investment decisions.

Furthermore, the government is set to develop plans to secure the jobs and growth opportunities arising from driving carbon out of the built environment, led by the Green Construction Board. It also aims to boost procurement efficiency and explore options for further gains in the process, led by the Government Construction Board and the IUK Client Group.
