Westmount Quarry in St. Helier, Jersey, is a prominent residential development, spearheaded by contractor Dandara Jersey. It features 250 balconies and a modern take on the apartments, complemented by communal amenities. The development boasts a stepped design, a nod to ecological value and expansive views, alongside landscape preservation.
As a development with over 200 balconies, the project called for a decking solution that could deliver value at scale. That’s where MyDek stepped in, supporting a safe, efficient installation across 1,601 sqm with Luxura decking.
Specific Challenges solved
The existing timber decking at Westmount Jersey had reached the end of its life, which had been installed over 10mm plywood. It came with the challenge of providing a replacement solution that had to work within a constrained build-up of just 30mm, positioned above 9mm steel flanges.
Our Approach
The first proposed approach was to replace the existing plywood with 9mm fibre-cement packers; however, securing them into the heavy-gauge steel structure presented significant challenges.
A more effective solution came with the development of SpeedRail, a 10mm top-hat rail designed to provide a secure fixing and improve installation speed and efficiency. This solution was rapidly developed, tested, and has since been incorporated into our standard product range for future projects.
Given the tight interface with the steelwork, shorter-than-standard screws were required to avoid clashes. To support this, we designed a screw jig to keep fixings aligned during installation, further boosting speed and accuracy in the process.

MyDek aimed to support this project with a forward-looking, practical solution, which led to the creation of SpeedRail, a bespoke 10mm top-hat rail designed to sit on the existing steelwork, providing a solid fixing while significantly speeding up installation.
By developing a product tailored to the project’s specific requirements, we reinforced our commitment to delivering value despite challenges. From SpeedRail to the design of screw jigs, the project incorporated smart solutions, including the successful first-time use of eight newly developed products.
