Vista Aluminium Decking Board Installed at Royal Arsenal Riverside - Decking by MyDek

When it comes to choosing the right decking material for your outdoor space, you probably have a lot of questions. To help you make an informed decision, the MyDek team is here to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our decking products. Whether you’re considering aluminium decking or fire-rated composite decking, we’ve got you covered.

1) Pros and Cons of Aluminium Decking

Pros:

  • Class A2 Fire Rating: Aluminium decking is a Class A2 fire-rated material, providing peace of mind when it comes to fire safety.
  • Longevity: With a 60-year design life, aluminium decking is built to last.
  • Resistance to Rust and Rot: This lightweight yet strong material won’t rust or rot, making it ideal for outdoor use.
  • Colour Variety: Our aluminium can be coated in a wide range of colours, allowing you to customise your deck’s appearance.
  • Eco-friendliness: Easily recyclable with a low-cost life cycle, aluminium is a sustainable choice.
  • Machinability: Aluminium is easily machine cut and handled for straightforward installation.

Cons:

  • Heat Retention: Aluminium can become hot to the touch when exposed to direct sunlight, which may not be ideal for barefoot walking.
  • Noise: The metallic nature of Aluminium makes it noisier to walk on and in heavy rainfall, compared to other materials like MyDek’s Luxura decking.
  • Wear and Tear: aluminium decking is powder coated and although MyDek products are coated with a super-durable coating the surface can be vulnerable to being scratched if for example, furniture or similar objects are dragged across it

2) Pros and Cons of Fire-Rated Composite Decking

Pros:

  • A1 Fire Rating: MyDek’s Luxura mineral composite decking has an A1 fire rating, making it the ultimate non-combustible decking choice.
  • Natural Look: Luxura provides a natural timber look, combining aesthetics with safety and practicality.
  • Slip Resistance: It offers exceptional slip resistance for safety in wet conditions.
  • Stain Resistance: Luxura is stain-resistant and easy to clean, so it retains its pristine appearance.
  • Durability: The hard-wearing mineral composite will never warp, twist or rot.
  • Comfort Underfoot: It feels solid underfoot and maintains a stable temperature range.
  • Machinability: Luxura can be cut and machined like hardwood, and can be mechanically fixed to eliminate the risk of wind uplift.
  • Warranty: Luxura comes with a 30-year limited warranty and a 60-year design life.

Cons:

  • Weight: Luxura is heavier than Aluminium but lighter than stone or concrete decking.
  • Special cutting blades: It requires specific blades to cut, but these are readily available on the market.

4) Sustainability and Longevity

Is MyDek Decking Recyclable? Both Aluminium and Luxura composite decking can be easily recycled. Aluminium can be recycled along with other scrap metals, while Luxura can be recycled along with other building materials like concrete and bricks, being typically repurposed through crushing.

Warranty: Most of MyDek’s decking ranges come with a 30-year warranty, ensuring the long-term performance of your deck (Innova has a 15-year warranty).

5) Decking Recommendations

High-Traffic Areas: While all MyDek products are designed for high-traffic areas, the Luxura range is particularly recommended for outstanding durability, making it ideal for balconies, terraces and any spaces requiring a high-performance surface.

6) Decking Maintenance and Durability

Slip Resistance: We rigorously test all our products to ensure that they comply with slip-resistance standards. Luxura ‘s mineral composite material offers outstanding slip resistance properties and is resistant to frost, algae and moss growth.

Noise: As with all metals, aluminium decking can sound metallic underfoot or resonate in heavy rain. If acoustic values are a concern, Luxura is recommended for its solid underfoot feel, similar to timber decking.

Fading in the Sun: MyDek products are built for long-term performance. Aluminium decking uses super-durable powder-coated materials with enhanced UV resistance, and Luxura offers outstanding UV resistance with no reports of fading.

Durability: Our Aluminium and Luxura decking systems have been extensively tested for load-bearing capacity and resistance to scratches and wear. With a 30-year warranty and a 60-year design life, they are designed for long-lasting performance.
